MasterClasses

We have spoken to leaders in education and asked them what are the areas that cause them concern. Generally they are saying that as they move into leadership in schools it is the areas that they have not come across in detail that causes them most worry. Right at the top of the list come Finance, HR and Governance – working with governors.

Responding to those needs we have developed a series of Masterclasses to address those concerns. Initially we have developed Masterclasses in the key areas identified – Finance, HR and Governance.

The Masterclasses are one-day programmes designed to give you a good working knowledge of the area. They will not turn you into an expert indeed as part of the Masterclass, particularly in HR, we will discuss the point at which to seek expert advice. They will, though, give you a very good working knowledge of the subject and enable you to deal with these matters with confidence.

Finance

The Finance Masterclass is open to all participants and is particularly valuable for senior leaders, aspiring headteachers, existing headteachers, headteachers joining MATs and executive headteachers.

The Masterclass will build the financial skills through understanding financial information and will cover

  • setting budgets in line with the strategic priorities of the school and measuring against actual spend
  • understanding income and expenditure in budgets and dealing with variances
  • internal controls
  • MAT financial governance

Through this better understanding you will be able to ensure that you and your staff are kept safe and compliant with the assurance that you are getting best value for money whilst reducing the potential for error and fraud.

Participants will leave the session with a number of tools that can be applied as suitable in their own schools.

Human Resources

The HR Masterclass is open to all participants and is particularly valuable for senior leaders, aspiring headteachers, existing headteachers, headteachers joining MATs and executive headteachers.

Working closely with educational organisations, we understand the pressures faced by staff in schools and the ever-changing environment they work in. We also understand that school leaders need to be equipped to meet the whole school demands.

This Human Resources Masterclass will build the necessary HR skills required. It will give confidence when dealing with HR issues, help understand when to seek expert advice and reduce the risk of miscarriage of process. It will develop a deeper understanding of the human resource issues through a series of areas that are key to leading a school.

Participants will leave the session with a number of tools that can be applied as suitable in their own schools.

Governance

The Governance Masterclass is open to all participants and is particularly valuable for senior leaders, aspiring headteachers, existing headteachers, headteachers joining MATs and executive headteachers.

The Governance Masterclass will allow aspirant Headteachers to develop a deeper understanding of working with Governors so that as Heads they will be in a position to develop a mutually challenging partnership with their Governing Board, centred on strategic priorities. The session will be practical and interactive.

More specifically the session will:

  • support school leaders to develop behaviours, skills and processes that result in effective relationships with the Governing Body, focussed on school improvement.
  • clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Governing Body and how they intersect with those of school leaders.
  • ensure that Heads understand the key strategic role of Governors and are able to both support and hold Governors to account to ensure they fulfil this role.

Participants will leave the session with a number of tools that can be applied as suitable in their own schools.
