This programme facilitates you developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours to be a high-performing Headteacher.

Who is this for?

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is for those who are, or are aspiring to become, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school.

What does it include?

  • on-the-job leadership training

  • challenge and support via an experienced coach and/or mentor

  • access to high-quality resources, drawing upon up-to-date research and evidence

  • professional development from and with credible peers

  • opportunities for structured reflection

What will you learn?

Each of the NPQ’s feature the same six content areas, however the knowledge and skills within a content area increases in sophistication, depth and breadth progressively through each of the NPQ levels

  • Strategy and improvement

  • Teaching and curriculum excellence

  • Leading with impact

  • Working in partnership

  • Managing resources and risks

  • Increasing capability

Final assessment

You will:

  • lead a school change programme, lasting at least 2 terms, to improve pupil progress and attainment

  • design an action plan to meet your placement school’s resourcing and capability needs

Through these projects, you will demonstrate competence via an assessment linked to knowledge and skills within the six content areas.

What does it involve?

EMLC will deliver NPQH via:
  • A Half day induction that will share an overview outlining course content and expectations, available support and assessment criteria

  • Five face-to-face days facilitated by expert school leaders and associates covering areas of importance

  • Support for school-based improvement projects with interactive sessions

  • Nine day school improvement placement in a host school

  • Opportunities for discussion and debate with peers and active support from colleagues

  • Opportunities to stimulate and challenge thinking alongside access to online course resources, facilitated coaching, skype sessions, peer learning and social media links

*Online modules offer a carefully constructed balance of activities that engage participant and stimulate research, reflection and discussion. A personal facilitator supports and challenges each individual participant. There are 14 hours of facilitated learning over a two-week period. NPQH has five two-week online modules.
